Problems with version 2.1.9

Despite all our best efforts to test new versions, it’s almost impossible to reproduce every different WordPress and server setups out there, and sometimes a release breaks someone’s site.

Well, 2.1.9 certainly did that!  It broke quite a number of your blogs. Badly. Very badly.

The good news is that it’s been fixed in version 2.2.1.  Just upgrade to that and you should be back to normal.

If you can’t get into wp-admin to update, then ftp to your site and delete the entire Easyrecipe plugin directory (/wp-content/plugins/easyrecipe) and re-install.

You shouldn’t lose any data, but as always with updates, take a backup before you do anything “just in case”.

EasyRecipe

We love our new WordPress recipe plugin and we want you to love it too.  If you have any problems please leave a comment here and we’ll answer it as quickly as we can.

We know how frustrating it is to use a plugin that bumps heads with another plugin but there is always a way around that if we know what the problem is.  We even have diagnostic tools to determine which plugin is causing difficulty.

EasyRecipe is really easy to use so don’t give up if you run into any problems.  We’re here to help.

If you have a problem, before you do anything else, check that you have the latest version at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/easyrecipe/

Common Questions

Why do I get “Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING” when trying to activate?

Your server is using an outdated version of PHP – and you are using an old version of Easy Recipe!  Easy Recipe requires PHP 5.0 or higher. It should be a simple matter for most hosting companies to update your server to the latest (or at least a recent!) version of PHP

How do I add a photo to Easy Recipe?

You don’t need to add a photo to Easy Recipe itself.  A photo anywhere in the post will be detected by the plugin and marked up in a way that Google will recognise.

How do I report a bug

You can either leave us a comment here, or you can use the built in diagnostics feature (introduced in version 1.2.3) to report the bug as well as send us details about your server and WP environment.  To use diagnostics, go to the WP “Tools” menu and select “Easy Recipe”

I am hoping to have my web designer display the star rating that someone gives one of our recipes next to their written comment. Is the star rating stored with the comment? Is this possible?

  • Ralph says:

Is anyone else having this problem?

On the blog under title it reads “Authors NameAuthor:” instead of “Author: Authors Name” but everywhere else it looks correct. What’s going on here. How can I fix it?

If yes, have you found a fix for it?

  • Ralph says:

Okay, I don’t like the way these display http://ralphseverson.com/category/recipes/

Is there a way to strip the Type, Author, Prep Time and such so that it wil not show until you go to the recipe page IE: http://ralphseverson.com/tuna-casserole/

    Appreciate your assistance.

  • Desmond says:

I’m unable to use jquery while easyrecipe is activated. I’ve narrowed it down to easyrecipe-format.js as the issue. I’m using no conflict syntax e.g.

    jQuery(document).ready(function(){alert(“HELLO WORLD!”);});

This only works when I deactivate easyrecipe or delete the easyrecipe-format.js file.

Do you have any idea what the problem may be?

  • Dean says:

Is there a way to import multiple Recipes? Like CVS file or Excel file?

  • Trine says:

First of all, thank you for an amazing plugin!

    I have some questions:

    1. Is it possible to disable the rating functionality?

    2. Is it possible to insert a background image for the recipe box instead of a color? Perhaps in the code?

    3. How can I decrease the indentation of the instructions? No matter which options I choose, the directions are always indented by approx. 20 pixels. For the ingredients, I can change this by choosing “inside” or “outside”, but this doesn’t work for instructions.

    • Trine says:

Sorry, I forgot to add that I’m having a problem with the formatting of the “Recipe Details”. When I change font size, padding, etc. for this and then refresh the page, the settings are restored to default. This is quote problematic as the default font is really small… and I’d like to change this. Thanks!

    • Jayce says:

It’s not yet possible to disable the rating functionality – we’re looking at it for a future release. It’s somewhat problematic because Google expects to see a rating and the reviews (comments) for their Recipe View.

Background images for the recipe will be in the next major release.

      Getting the indentation of

    • tags (which is what the ingedients and instructions are marked up as) correct is tricky, we know. The next major release will give you more control over indentation
  • Lucy says:

Some of my recipes are not displaying the print option. Any idea why? Here is one: http://inasouthernkitchen.com/2011/04/overnight-french-toast/

    Thanks

  • Stephen says:

Just had a client upgrade to the latest version, and the problem I mentioned above is still happening – any chance of this being fixed so I don’t need to keep hacking the plugin for them each upgrade?

  • ikemarrrus says:

I love Easy Recipe, but am having two issues.
    1) The label “Carbs” doesn’t print out when you fill in a value for that field.

    2) It seems that infomation is being sent to My Big Recipe Box even if that option is turned off.

It would be great if these glitches could be fixed. Thanks for such a nice product.

    • ikemarrrus says:

another odd thing is that after I uncheck “List at my big recipe box” — it eventually becomes checked again! I have no idea what causes that to happen, but it’s happened several times.

  • Adam says:

I wanted to completely hide and make the review nonfunctional. I was able to hide the reviews but there were 3 reviews that were saved before I could hide it. Is there an easy way to erase the 3 reviews?

We would like people to rate the recipes constructively with comments instead of a simple star system. Or better still if you review with the star rating it forces you to comment so you can moderate :)

    • Jayce says:

“Reviews” are simply the comments on the recipe. Just delete the comments you don’t want included in the “reviews”

  • Flavia Botto Gallina says:

Hi. I have a mac (OS 10.5.8) is it compatible?
    Thanks

  • ikemarrrus says:

The option for “Automatically list your recipes at MyBigRecipeBox.com” should be off by default. I didn’t realize this was checked when trying out Easy Recipe (which I really like) and creating test recipes. How can I be sure these are not listed at that site? (If I click this option off and republish the recipe, will it be removed from MyBigRecipeBox.com? )

    • Maureen says:

MyBigRecipeBox.com isn’t live yet and all we plan to do is link to your recipe on your site, not republish anyone’s recipe in total. It’s just a way for users of Easy Recipe plugin to get more traffic to their blogs. I’m happy to remove your blog from that but I need to know what your blog is. Thanks. Email me at maureen [at] orgasmicchef [dot] com.

      • ikemarrrus says:

        Hi Maureen,
I’m not sure that I understand – but I think you’re saying that no recipe links are being collected right now. No need to remove the blog as long as today’s test recipes won’t show up on myBigRecipeBox — we may want to turn this feature on for the blog at a later time. If today’s recipes have already been collected, please let me know and I’ll email you the name of the blog so you can make sure they are removed.

Thanks and I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

        • Maureen says:

No, we ARE collecting the recipe urls but we just havent had time to develop the link site yet. email me at maureen[at] orgasmichchef[dot]com and I’ll get John to remove your blog. Thanks for replying.

  • Hi, I’m seeing the following exception quite a bit in my blogs error log. Do you know what is causing it? “PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function appendChild() on a non-object in /home/josietav/public_html/wp-content/plugins/easyrecipe/class-ERDOMDocument.php on line 329″

    • Maureen says:

No, I don’t know what’s causing that and as soon as we get our servers moved from one webhost to another we’ll get stuck into it. At the moment we need to get this done so we can pay the mortgage. I’m really sorry for the delay. Our server move has nothing to do with Easy Recipe, however. We don’t use a central database like some of the other plugins. All your recipes sit wherever your blog is hosted.

  • Hello, I just found this plugin and have been excitedly updating my pages with fancy new recipe layouts and print options. I had one question, how do I change the default image that is added to the recipe printout/google display. The first image on my posts aren’t always the one I want associated with my recipe.

  • Henrietta says:

So glad it’s fixed now! Thank you!

  • Desmond says:

Thanks for the update Jayce. I’m happy this plugin is well-supported because I really like it. Thanks!

  • Just updated as well and my site CRASHED and I can’t get into anything! Help please!

  • Bob says:

I love this plugin too, but the only way I could get my recipes showing was to replace it with another plugin today. I hope this is just temporary as I have almost 8800 recipes and dread importing them into a new plugin. Like others, the update today caused an unrecoverable error. Any ideas for work around with details? Thanks!

  • Henrietta says:

Updated to 2.1.9 this morning and it killed my site with this error on both the blog and the admin –

Catchable fatal error: Object of class stdClass could not be converted to string in /home/hensnest/public_html/wp-content/plugins/easyrecipe/class-easyrecipe.php on line 230

I had to go into cpanel and rename the plugin to get my site to load. Will check back to see if this has a fix, I really like this plugin!

  • Desmond says:

    Getting this warning now:
Warning: trim() expects parameter 1 to be string, object given in /…/…/…/html/wp-content/plugins/easyrecipe/class-easyrecipe.php on line 230

  • Kali says:

Oh, yeah, and my admin bar disappeared too…

  • Kali says:

The Easy Recipe upgrade just killed my site. I can’t access anything on the front end — I get this error: Catchable fatal error: Object of class stdClass could not be converted to string in /home/kalital/yay-food/wp-content/plugins/easyrecipe/class-easyrecipe.php on line 230

And when I attempt to turn off the plugin via “Deactivate” I wind up with a blank screen and the plugin doesn’t deactivate. I’m going to have to delete it by hand. But this is awful because it’s a food blog and it depends on the plugin for recipe formatting. Help would be welcome, and fast!

    Thank you!

  • Tim says:

When we updated to WP 3.3 the admin bar disappeared. After updating to 3.3.1 I was able to localize the problem to Easy Recipe.

The issue is when logged in to the site and displaying a normal post, the admin bar at the top of the screen isn’t visible. It is visible in the admin pages though. The WP forums suggest this is an issue with a specific CSS class(?) definition (sorry, kind of a newby, can’t relocate that reference either).

We could really use a fix, I miss that admin bar…

  • Love the plugin, but 2 things…

    1) I have been entering “mins” for my recipe time like the example and when I run Google’s Rich Snippets Testing Tool it does not seem to recognize or like mins. It prefers “minutes” in the recipe box. Not sure if it’s a big deal, but thought I’d pass along as I’m sure most people are entering “mins”.

    2) Also when running the testing tool, I consistently get 2 more errors in the recipe area one says “Warning: At least one field must be set for Hcard” and the other “Warning: Missing required field “updated”".

I have tested pages using other recipe plugins and they do not seem to get the above errors. Hope you can fix or let me know if I’m doing something wrong. Thanks!

  • Joshua Trent says:

First off, love EasyRecipe. It’s really easy and great to use and it automatically converts my old recipe formats which is a big time saver. I just upgraded to the new version by now my recipe info at the top of the recipes isn’t showing up. Instead of Cook Time: 30 mins it just say : 30 mins. Is this something I did? What can I do to fix it. Thanks!

  • Karen says:

There are three things I am trying to figure out that don’t seem to be working for me.

    1. If I change the formatting for the recipe details, either on the recipe view or the print view, as soon as the window is refreshed it reverts back and my changes don’t stay to the text size or the font or font color.

    2. How do you change the background for the “Rate this recipe” box that appears at the end? It seems to be picking up a color from my website but I cannot find where to change the color to be none or white instead.

    3. The other thing that doesn’t seem to stay when I change it is within the plugin settings, the checkbox to place a tiny link back to Easy Recipe. If I uncheck it, it always goes back to being checked.

    • Karen says:

One more thing that I have noticed is that for my ingredient list I cannot control the indent. If I put margin and padding left at zero it looks fine if I am logged into my site but once I log out and view it as the rest of the world will, it indents the list. I also have list type set to none as I don’t want a bulleted list or anything like that.

  • SJ says:

I keep getting the open target symbols before each ingredient. It shows up when I view the uploaded post also. How do I get rid of, or at least make them solid. Link below.

  • Laura says:

Is there a way to do two separate recipe in one post?

  • Stephen says:

Have discovered a bug which causes some formatting changes on the print version of the plugin (when applied with the formatting box) to not show up properly.

For example, if I set instructions items to have list-style = none, the numbers are removed on the formatting admin page (when erformat is set in the URL), but not on the normal print view.

This is due to the fact the easyrecipe-print.css is setting the list-style on:

    body .easyrecipe ol li {..list-style:inherit;..}

Which is stronger than (and thus overriding) the inline CSS which doesn’t have the ‘body’ at the start:

    .easyrecipe ol li {..list-style:none;..}

All of the inline CSS should really use !important to make sure they are used.

  • Karen says:

I’m trying to use Easy Recipe in WordPress and the screen for inputing the recipes has a transparent background that makes it really hard to input the recipes. Is this really how it works or is there something I can do to fix this? Any help would be great. Thanks!

  • Hi. My website is looking great. When I copy the url for one of my recipes and go to enter that in a facebook post, instead of getting my recipe summary under the picture and heading, I am getting:
You may use these HTML tags and attributes:

Is there a way around this? Thanks much.
